Shri Dipankar Basu Mr. Dipankar Basu retired as Chairman, State
Bank of India (SBI) at the end of August,1995. As
Chairman, State Bank of India, he concurrently chaired the Boards of 10 commercial banking
subsidiaries of SBI (seven in India and one each in U.K. Canada and U.S.A) and three
non-banking subsidiaries viz. SBI Capital Markets Ltd.
SBI Funds Management Ltd. and SBI Factors & Commercial Services Ltd.
Joining SBI in 1956, after obtaining a
Masters Degree in Economics from Delhi University.
Mr. Basu spent his entire professional career with SBI , serving in India as
well as in the U.K. In India, he led the
Banks entry into the investment banking and mutual fund businesses and was
responsible for setting up SBI Capital Markets Ltd. and SBI Mutual Fund.
While serving as Chairman, State Bank of
India, Mr. Basu served on the Boards of several apex, financial institutions of India
(e.g. Industrial Development of Bank of India, Export Import Bank of India, General
Insurance Corporation of India Ltd. National Bank of
Agriculture and Rural Development etc.) as also on the Governing Boards of
national level banking Association and Institutes. Prior
to his appokintment as Chairman, State Bank of India, Mr. Basu served as the non-executive
Chairman of Thomas Cook (India) Ltd. for two years.
After retiring from State Bank of India,
Mr. Basu has been associated at the Board level with several companies including IDBI,
SAIL, IPCL, Chambal Fertilisers & Chemicals, SBI Cards & Payment Services and Jet
Airways (India) Ltd. He is Chairman of the
Boards of Securities Trading Corporation of India Ltd.
Sun F & C Asset Management (India) Private Ltd. and Rain Calcining Ltd. Till recently he was a Member of the Disinvestment
Commission set up by the Government of India in 1996.
Mr. D.Basu has been nominated by Securities And
Exchange Board of India as a Public Representative Director on the Committee of Calcutta
Stock Exchange for the year 2000-2001.
